Two cleansers? Really? Yes — and once you understand why, you won't go back. Double cleansing is the quiet secret behind that clear, prepped K-beauty canvas. Here's how to do it right.
What is double cleansing?
It's exactly what it sounds like: cleansing twice, with two different types of cleanser. First an oil-based cleanser, then a water-based one. Each removes what the other can't — together they clean thoroughly without harsh scrubbing.

Why two steps?
Oil dissolves oil. Sunscreen, makeup, sebum, and pollution are oil-based — a water cleanser alone can't fully lift them. The oil cleanser melts them away first; the water-based cleanser then removes sweat, dirt, and any residue. The result is genuinely clean skin that's still comfortable, not tight.
Step 1: The oil cleanser
Massage a balm or oil cleanser onto dry skin for 30–60 seconds, then add a little water to emulsify (it turns milky) and rinse. This is the step that dissolves sunscreen and makeup.

Step 2: The water-based cleanser
Follow with a gentle, low-pH foam or gel cleanser to remove anything left behind. Massage, rinse with lukewarm water, and you're done. Skin should feel clean and soft — never squeaky or tight. Maintaining a gentle, low-pH cleansing approach helps protect the skin barrier (National Library of Medicine).
Do you need to double cleanse every day?
Evenings: yes, especially if you wear sunscreen or makeup (and you should be wearing sunscreen daily). Mornings: no — a single gentle cleanse, or just water, is enough. Double cleansing is a PM ritual.
What comes next?
A clean base is step one of your routine. After cleansing, move on to toner, treatments, and moisturizer. See the full Korean routine order guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is double cleansing necessary?
If you wear sunscreen or makeup, yes — in the evening. It removes what a single cleanse leaves behind, without harsh scrubbing.
Will double cleansing dry out my skin?
Not if you use gentle, low-pH formulas. The point is thorough and gentle — skin should feel soft, not tight.
Can oily skin double cleanse?
Absolutely — it's great for clearing excess oil and sunscreen. Just use lightweight, non-greasy formulas.
What goes first, oil or water cleanser?
Oil first (on dry skin), water-based second. Oil dissolves oil-based grime; the water cleanser finishes the job.
